Go cat go

They are multiplying….

The wee sprite on the right is Daisy Stone (named after the main character/author of The Stone Diaries). Can’t see it in this picture but she has the *cutest* beauty mark by her mouth. Totally Marilyn Monroe style. The big guy in the window seat is Ellie Elliot; he’s appeared on this blog before. But, this is Daisy’s debut.

All cuteness and kitty whining aside, both cats are getting shut out of my office today while I write because this picture is about as serene as it gets. Limited amount of writing time today and the four hours I spend in front of this machine needs to be put to the best use possible. Experimental essay in progress — which means if turns it out all “pear-shaped” by this weekend then I need to turn around and write a different essay, so there’s little time to spend scooting cats off of my desk, lap, or book piles. Taking risks in writing can be fun, but also nerve racking when there’s something so important at stake. Can’t hold back now though. It’s time to pull all the stops. I had planned on putting this experiment off, doing something safer, more comfortable, but everything in my gut says the time is now. I’m giving it a go anyway.

Behold and Beholden

Susan Gubar was in town a few weeks ago for a 2wk seminar and a talk entitled “Snapshots of Feminism, Present Tense.” I mentioned a while ago that I would write a more extended blog post on Prof. Gubar’s work and achievements. I’ve decided that any attempt at this (particularly in the blog venue) would be a gross reduction of her overall awesomeness. I can’t think of any other scholar whose work means more to me (both her work with and independent from Sandra Gilbert). I do not wish to diminish her work in what would inevitably be a reductive description of it. Instead, I’ll just offer a few brief and somewhat random notes on her and her visit to Lawrence.

When I started trying to get things in motion to secure her visit to KU in September 2007 one of my profs sent me a cfp for a new collection of essays on Madwoman in the Attic in honor of its thirtieth birthday. At the time I didn’t feel as thought I had anything of significance to contribute. Now, however, I think I do. I’ve already missed the opportunity to submit something for that particular collection of essays, but what I’m trying to say is — someday maybe I’ll write an article, instead of a lame blog post, that does justice to G & G’s work both together and separate from one another. (Seems as though people get fixated on Madwoman or No Man’s Land and hardly notice the mountains of their other valuable and illuminating work. Not that Madwoman doesn’t deserve it; she’s certainly my fave too, but one mustn’t forget that there are many other books and articles besides their first groundbreaking one.)

Speaking of Madwoman in the Attic — get a load of this site called Ophelia Art where one can buy madwoman t-shirts, teddy bears, aprons, bags, buttons, you-name-it. They even have thongs?? and boxershorts?? I have to admit — I own a madwoman t-shirt in the most appropriate color, red. And, I was even brave enough to wear it in front of Prof Gubar (though I was blushing the whole time). But, honestly who wants or needs madwoman underwear?? It just seems a little much for me.

NOW, boxer briefs with ANXIETY OF INFLUENCE printed on them would seem entirely appropriate!!! ;-P

Even though I was embarrassed to showcase my affection for Prof Gubar’s work, the t-shirt actually came in quite handy while planning this event/extravaganza. Any time I ran into someone who wasn’t able to grasp the importance of Prof Gubar’s work and existence in the universe I could just point to the shirt and say — see! see!! I think it was probably my enthusiasm and not the shirt that convinced them of Gubar’s acclaim. Putting my nerdom out there for jest never hurts though; humility, in this case, was a strong-suit. Whenever I meet someone who doesn’t even know about Madwoman I find myself in shock and I can never keep my bottom jaw from falling to the floor. Usually, there’s a facial expression and a gasp that goes along with the dropping of the jaw too. Maybe feminists need to start wearing t-shirts to advertise their favorite books, authors, or ideas. Maybe that would help spread the word and rally people. In my case, at least, it worked. Everything was done the way I wanted it to be and the room was packed for her talk. There were tornado warnings out that evening too. (The severity of Kansas weather, particularly in tornado season, is not to be underestimated.) So, not only would we have had more people come had the weather not been so threatening, but the folks who did come risked getting caught in a deluge to hear Gubar speak. The turnout for the event made me very happy not only because I felt responsible to make sure it went well, but also since it proved, yet again, what a lovely and lively intellectual community resides here in Lawrence, KS.

Back to the real subject of this post — Susan Gubar:
This woman is seriously brilliant and prolific. The images below don’t even represent everything she’s worked on. And, there’s a bushel of critical articles published in other places as well. Anyone able to be this productive without compromising quality has to be considered a force of nature. Her intellectual energy and generosity represents a force for which I, for one, am very grateful.

While I won’t attempt to offer an overview of Gubar’s body of work or a summary of her talk even, I can say that even though the long list of her publications is impressive (to say the least) — she’s even more amazing in person. I really can’t find words sufficient enough to capture the spirit of her work or personal being. Brilliant, insightful, generous, and kind only begin to describe her splendor which often renders me speechless. Someday, though, I will find words to express what it is that I want to say about her spirit and her work — the foundation it serves for my intellectual endeavors and what it means to me personally as well. She’s truly an amazingly brilliant and beautiful woman to behold.

If you don’t know her work (jaw drop) — read it now. I’d recommend starting with Madwoman then moving to Rooms of Our Own. From there one could go in a number of different directions. I personally enjoy all the essays in Critical Condition, but if you’re less interested in feminism I suggest looking at Racechanges or Poetry After Auschwitz. A few articles not to be overlooked would be: Gubar’s essay on “The Blank Page” (published in numerous places), G & G’s essay on grandmatologies in Female Autograph, and G & G’s “Mirror and Vamp” found in Making Feminist History. Of course, these sources only serve as starting points for a very rich, and surprisingly pleasurable, body of work to read.

Whether Sublime

Ah, the wordpress gods have fixed my webpage!! Went to KC today to get my computer (Bertha) fixed. Thought it was about time. They wanted to take her away from me and mail her off but I said NO. NOT TODAY. I need my computer! I’ll ship her off to get worked on sometime mid-July maybe. Anyway, I was on my way home, driving through downtown KC, when the sky literally opened up and the deluge began. Golf ball size hail fell and dented the hood of my car in several places. I honestly thought I was in the middle of a tornado — blowing rain, black sky, clouds that looked like they had all the potential in the world to turn into funnels, lightening, hail, debris, you-name-it. I kept on keeping on though. Finally, once I got within 20 miles of Lawrence the sky began to look less bleak (insert obvious metaphorical meaning). The rain kept on coming down hard but the sun created a blanket of warm yellow light behind the downpour. Then, the rain finally let up and on the right side of the road appeared the sun (apparently trying to make up for being hidden all day) with fluffy multicolored clouds. While on the left side of the road everything was dark bluish gray with a gigantic lovely full-length rainbow. Everything behind me in the direction of KC was still black. What a long, strange, and terrifyingly beautiful drive. Completely sublime.

Here’s an interesting link to writer’s rooms, compliments of The Guardian. Something’s wrong with wordpress lately so I can’t attach a link; I can only cut and past the url. Also, everything on my site is now in italics and I cannot change it back. It’s both odd and annoying.

Above is a pic of my writing room. A bit messy and cluttered right now since I’m in the middle of multiple projects, but a very comfortable space nonetheless. I write all over my house, not just in this room. I’m very fortunate to have rooms of my own in which to work. My cat invades them all.

On Feminist Mothers and the Generational Problem

Being a feminist certainly is a no-brainer for me, but being a feminist mother or a mother in general…that’s a more complicated issue. Here’s a new post at ecriturefemme on the issue, if anyone’s interested. I’d love to hear what others think about this.

Multitasker

You know, some days ya just need to laugh. For me, that would be TODAY. This video is so funny it made me cry. And, in addition to that I think it is indicative of the standards our society holds for women today. Women are still expected to do _everything_ from succeeding in their jobs (notice they’re primarily secretarial jobs in the clip) to looking perfectly fit and healthy. As Adrienne Rich put it in her essay, “Notes Toward a Politics of Location”: “I don’t know when most women sleep.” My answer to that question is — I don’t.

I don’t work out all that often (it’s bad for me; I know, I know), so this video isn’t all that applicable. I still find it HILARIOUS nonetheless. I’m not going to turn down a good laugh today (or any day). ;-)

Oddly enough all of this is indicative of the fact that I’m in the zen right now. Somehow even the most upsetting thing only moderately disrupts my state of peace and calm at the moment. Or, maybe that’s the lack of sleep talking. I swear it feels like zen though. Either way, I believe it’s laughter that’s going to keep me here.

Cosmos Aligning: “I’ve Got the Moves”

Filed under: Uncategorized — ecriturefemme @ 8:13 pm

The planets are starting to align, which is exciting, but I’ve got to kick projects 1 and 2 out the door in the next few days. Then, I will focus on making certain the event I’ve been planning all year long goes smoothly. I’m starting to feel a little like Mrs. Dalloway….

Project numero uno — you’re coming out of the womb and going out into the world whether you like it or not. Been gestating for loong enough. It’s clearly a scholarly work of criticism on autobiography, but it’s turned out to be more autobiographical than anything else (which has made it all the more difficult to write). It’s not obviously autobiographical though; only people who really know me will realize this. Completely ironic since I’ve been writing about a woman who refuses to recognize she’s writing about herself — while here I sit doing the same damn thing.

Anyway, I’m pushing for the cosmos to align (a fantasy, I’m aware). Still pushing nonetheless, since I’m the only one with the power to bring my own words, thoughts, and desires into being. (Why must I repeatedly lapse into utilizing an essentialist birth metaphor? This is an issue related to female authorship that I’ll have to deal with later, in another post for another day perhaps.) Ciao for now.

Feels like it’s been raining for weeks on end now, but it’s only been a few days. My cat is enjoying this because when it rains (and it’s not too humid) I open up all the windows and screen doors. He’s sitting by a screen door right now, taking a whiff of the smell of rain.

My to do list is getting shorter, but not everything’s crossed off yet; there still is much to be done before I will consider it officially Summer. Here’s another video to hold you (my dear invisible and imaginary blog readers) over until I return to the world with free-time.

p.s. This song/video is the bomb. Feel the feminist techno vibe.

Same-sex marriage legal in California! And, just in time for the wedding season…. Yet one more reason to move to Cali!

Is that Jewelle Gomez there?

I think Amy King’s got it right — “if you don’t support gay marriage, don’t get one!” Hooray for California!
